{"id":49006,"date":"2016-11-11T11:59:59","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T16:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selasite.azurewebsites.net\/what-does-donald-trump-s-victory-mean\/"},"modified":"2023-06-28T06:53:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T11:53:51","slug":"what-does-donald-trump-s-victory-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/what-does-donald-trump-s-victory-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"What does Donald Trump&#8217;s victory mean for the energy industry?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"434\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/energy_20161114.webp\" alt=\"Energy _20161114\" data-udi=\"umb:\/\/media\/ed009861d5054d66b0c6966ac2d2414b\"><\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump wants to increase US domestic energy production and reduce regulations Credit: Alamy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/authors\/emily-gosden\/\">Emily Gosden<\/a>, Energy Editor.- With a man who says global warming is an \u201cexpensive hoax\u201d about to become leader of the free world, it\u2019s no surprise that fossil fuel companies have been seen as some of the biggest beneficiaries of the US election result &#8211; while renewable energy investors have taken fright.<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText version-2 section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  version-2\">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p>Donald Trump\u2019s presidency is likely to herald a seismic shift in US domestic energy policy, unravelling many of Barack Obama\u2019s key environmental policies.<\/p>\n<p>It also threatens the fragile global progress to tackling climate change that Mr Obama helped spearhead \u2013 risking undermining the growth of green energy worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p>Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica First Energy Plan\u201d pledges to \u201cunleash an energy revolution that will bring vast new wealth to our country\u201d. America may already have undergone a shale revolution but Trump wants to go further, accessing \u201c$50 trillion in untapped shale, oil and natural gas reserves, plus hundreds of years in clean coal reserves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas Hillary Clinton had threatened curbs on fracking, Trump plans to rip up energy regulations, lifting moratoriums on production in federal lands and to \u201csave the coal industry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLess regulation could help\u00a0energy investments because it could lower companies\u2019 costs to pull resources out of the ground,\u201d Jeff Rottinghaus of the T. Rowe Price US Large Cap Equity Fund explains.<\/p>\n<p>While shares in coal producers jumped on the Trump victory, analysts at Bernstein warn that scrapping environmental regulations may not revive the industry. \u201cCheap natural gas is the true chief culprit in\u00a0coal&#8217;s decline, and if\u00a0Trump&#8217;s other campaign promises regarding expanding gas infrastructure are to be believed,\u00a0gas supply may grow even more quickly than it would have under Clinton,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p>Will Scargill of GlobalData, also cautions that Trump\u2019s support for shale may be frustrated by the fact many regulations exist at local or state level. Despite this, he says Trump\u2019s pledges suggest \u201ca positive outlook for the oil and gas sector\u201d \u2013 not least with Harold Hamm, chief executive of oil firm Continental Resources, a candidate for energy secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s victory also brings the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to the US, which was blocked by Obama on climate grounds, back on the agenda, and is likely to mean full steam ahead for the controversial Dakota access pipeline, with Trump owning a stake in the company building it.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to global oil prices, the ramifications are unclear. An increase in US production could put further downward pressure on prices, as could any slowdown to global economic growth. However, if Trump revokes the nuclear agreement with Iran and reintroduces sanctions, Commerzbank analysts say, \u201coil prices would presumably rise\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Renewables, which benefited from support from Obama, look vulnerable under Trump \u2013 as evidenced by the plunge in shares in Denmark\u2019s Vestas, the world\u2019s biggest wind turbine maker, and several US solar companies on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has derided wind farms as \u201cvery ugly\u201d \u2013 not least those planned next to his Aberdeenshire golf course \u2013 and blamed them for killing birds, while criticising the costs of both wind and solar.<\/p>\n<p>According to S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, if Trump were to end investment tax credit incentives for renewables it could \u201cslash solar installation demand by 60pc\u201d.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/763474491183816704\/photo\/1\"><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleBodyText section\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text component  \">\n<div class=\"component-content\">\n<p>But Matthew Knight, a UK executive of wind manufacturer Siemens, argues Trump\u2019s climate scepticism doesn\u2019t necessarily spell the end for renewables in the US as prices fall. \u201cIf you deny the science, that doesn\u2019t change the economics,\u201d he says. \u201cSolar and wind in [parts of] North America are financially comparable with gas and coal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashim Paun, director of climate change strategy at HSBC agrees that falling costs may still see some solar and wind deployment but says Trump\u2019s election is \u201cnegative\u201d for renewables \u2013 and for \u201cglobal climate momentum\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While Obama helped negotiate a climate deal with China that paved the way the historic global emissions-reductions deal in Paris last year, Trump has pledged to \u201ccancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of US tax dollars to UN global warming programmes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Whether countries like China and India would still see merit in green energy in the absence of US action remains to be seen, but Trump\u2019s stance can hardly be helpful \u2013 and could potentially be disastrous.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Oppenheimer, professor of international affairs at Princeton told the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>: \u201cIf Trump doesn\u2019t change his view of the Paris agreement and doesn\u2019t honor the commitments [Obama] made, that virtually guarantees that the international process will fall into disarray.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does Donald Trump&#8217;s victory mean for the energy industry?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-49006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-boletines-regionales"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49006","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=49006"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49006\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=49006"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=49006"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/rmtsolutions.net\/sela\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=49006"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
